A total of 6,716 data breaches were reported to the Irish Data Protection Commissioner last year, making the office one of the busiest in Europe.
Research from DLA Piper shows that Ireland had the second highest number of reports on a per-capita basis, coming second only to the Netherlands.
Ireland’s high ranking probably should not be a big surprise, given that Ireland is home to so many big tech multinationals. Under GDPR rules that makes it the lead regulator for any issues like these.
But the regulator here has so far not levied any sanctions against the companies it is investigating for GDPR breaches.
